Learning the Basics of How a Magnetic Card Reader Works
Magnetic cards are used for much more today that just banking. Companies and individuals alike are making use of them in the everyday world for various security reasons and because of the convenience of the information that is stored. It is much easier to issue these types of cards to people and then have them swipe them through a magnetic card reader than have to stop everyone and check them for id or a security clearance. All of that information can be kept on the strip of the card.
Each magnetic card reader is fitted with a device that is called the read head. This read head is what is used to pull the information off of the card and then translate it via recovery circuitry that is built into the programming and then it sends that information to the host controller to be translated. This sound a lot more complicated than it is as this is, but the technology is actually pretty simple.
When the card is swiped, the information that is stored on the magnetic strip is pulled off of the tracks that are embedded in the strip. Each track has specific items and depending upon the magnetic strip card reader, it will translate them one at a time or pull the information off of them all at the same time.
If you have ever had to have your card swiped more than once, it is because the head reader was unable to pick up certain data from the card. In order for it to be processed correctly, the reader has to be able to gather all of the information in the split second that it takes you to swipe it.
If the process is done correctly, all information is downloaded into whatever system you are using and that is really all there is to it. There is a lot going on in very little time, but the amount of time that they save can be enormous. Think about how long it can take an individual to check everything that someone pulls out for id, when all of that can be stored on a simple magnetic strip for processing.
The type of information that can be stored on a magnetic strip is really up to the individual. We are all familiar with how the credit cards work, but this can work with just about anything. As stated earlier, they are now becoming very prominent in corporations for security. Instead of having guards posted at every door, employees can be given cards with a magnetic strip that they can run through the magnetic card reader and either be granted or denied access.
